Thea : The Awakening

THEA: THE AWAKENING is a unique game that combines the gameplay of card base strategy with a turn base strategy with management thrown into the mix. THEA: THE AWAKENING story is based on the mythology of Slavic gods and the people that worship these gods are trying to bring their god’s forwishen to life. Thea is the world which the game takes place and Thea is now alive in which the world is constantly changing whether it’s bring the dead back to life or dwarfs that want your help to win over a demon’s heart. As a god it is your will to help your worshiper’s survive the events that come and to ultimately bring back your powers that have somehow escaped you.

THEA: THE AWAKENING starts with a selection of a god and these gods will vary by the attributes they have to offer your worshipers for your playthrough. When you first start you will only have two options for the god you choose and it varies from person to person which two you will start with. There are currently 8 total gods in the game and in order to unlock the other six have to level gods up to unlock additional gods to play which also unlocks more attributes for the god your leveling.

The game gives you a village and a group for expeditions to begin with. The village is where you gather supplies and store gear you get through out the game. Also the village is upgradeable to give you additional benefits very much like Civilization’s town system. Then you have your expeditions that is a group that explores to gather items, complete various quest, or just kill somethings. Combat system is very complex it’s a turn base card game and is best explained by the in game guide.

Overall I would have to say this game does their mechanics really well but leaves you disappointed with minor flaws. Gameplay can seem very tendious and grindy at points of the game whether your just waiting to gather a certain amount of supplies to make an upgrade or the combat system leaves with you question on why you lose a battle do to sheer luck of the AI. There is some replay value in the since of playing different gods and difficulty settings but the story doesn’t change. I will mention that the game is quite difficult even on the easiest settings of the game I have not beat an entire playthrough with 20+ hours in the game.

THEA: THE AWAKENING is currently listed on sale on Steam for $9.99 and on consoles at $17.99. Personally it’s a bit pricey for what it offers but for those looking for a challenge and a completely different style of game from any turn base strategy currently available this could be worth a look.
